Ladybug, Ladybug!

by Jennifer Landrieu, Director

5 little ladybugs climbing up a door.
One flew away, then there were 4.
4 little ladybugs sitting on a tree.
One flew away, then there were 3.
3 little ladybugs landed on a shoe.
One flew away, then there were 2.
2 little ladybugs looking for some fun.
One flew away, then there was 1.
1 little ladybugs sitting in the sun.
She flew away, and then there were none!

2013051002The Monday-Wednesday-Friday four-year-old classes are learning about the ladybug’s life cycle and they have a front row seat! Each classroom has a ladybug habitat with ladybugs in various stages. When they arrived, there were eggs and larvae. We now have ladybugs in the pupa and beetle stages.

Some children witnessed a beetle emerging from the pupa stage this week! We were a bit surprised to see that it was yellow and not red at first. It takes a few days for the ladybug to turn red and then her spots appear, too.

Our ladybugs like eating raisins and we add water to their habitat daily. We’ll keep them for a week or so and then let set them free in the church gardens. The children are excited to watch them fly away.

You can do it at your house, too! Visit www.insectlore.com and search for ladybugs.

Week of the Young Child

by Jennifer Landrieu, Director

Week of the Young Child - NBRC Preschool Bridgewater NJThe National Association for the Education of Young Children is dedicated to excellence in early childhood education and in their efforts to educate others, created the “Week of the Young Child.” This week-long celebration is held every April and at the North Branch Reformed Church Preschool we celebrate it with fun activities for our students.

Week of the Young Child Fun Bus - NBRC Preschool Bridgewater NJSome of our fun themed days were PJ Day, Crazy Hat/Hair Day, and Backward Day – several of our little friends even walked into school backwards! Our oldest classes visited the Theatre at Raritan Valley Community College to see “Treasured Stories of Eric Carle.”

The children were excited when the big, green FUN BUS pulled-up in our driveway and each class had a movement/exercise class on board. Everyone had lots of fun sliding out the back of the bus, too.

We loved celebrating with our 150+ young friends and look forward to doing it again next year!

Grandparent’s Week

by Jennifer Landrieu, Director

13042603We have the best group of grandparents at the North Branch Reformed Church Preschool!

This week is “Grandparent’s Week” and our Preschoolers invited their grandparents to join them for the first hour of classes.

13042604If you were at the Preschool this week, you may have seen a grandpa lying down on the floor as he helped to build a block castle, a grandma who helped to host a tea party in the housekeeping center, a grandma rolling playdough caterpillars, and a grandpa reading a story to a group of very interested preschoolers. Best of all, we saw lots of hugs, kisses, and smiles!

Thanks for visiting us grandmas and grandpas!

(The Preschool is accessible to all with handicapped parking available, exterior ramps to the main floor, and an elevator to gain access to the second floor classrooms.)

Life of a Butterfly (Part 1)

by Kim Sodano & Gerianne McGowan

The story of the Monarch butterfly…an annual journey that spans a continent, three nations, and multiple generations of monarchs…captures the hearts and minds of people of all ages.
(Journeys MTN, 2010)

13042201Our thoughts when we heard about a workshop about the Life of the Monarch Butterfly was, “What could someone possibly teach us about caterpillars and butterflies that could take 15 hours?” To our surprise they were able to intrigue us on these beautiful creatures.

Walking into the building at Raritan Valley Community center, the first day we saw two large tents surrounded by cages of butterflies. We were told to come in and feed the butterflies. Really?!…feed the butterflies?

With the instructor teaching us how to properly catch a butterfly from its cage, we brought it over to the tent where we were shown how to feed them using a tooth pick to pull out it’s proboscis and feed it juicy juice. We were then introduced to the butterfly enthusiasts that came from all over the U.S. and Canada to volunteer their time to teach. Each one of them loved and cared for these butterflies and caterpillars, as if they were their own children.

We thought, “Wow!, we would never get that carried away…” Until we found ourselves on the side of the road searching for caterpillar eggs and milkweed plants to bring this journey of hope to our classrooms.

Dental Health

by Jennifer Landrieu

20130315Our Preschoolers learned all about keeping their teeth healthy when Dental Hygienists, Donna and Danielle, visited our classrooms.

It’s recommended that a child should visit the dentist within six-months of their first tooth’s arrival, or by their first birthday, and every 3-6 months after that. Your dentist will usually spend 15 to 30 minutes performing a gentle exam and cleaning.

Children should brush their teeth twice a day for about two-minutes, spending 30-seconds on each quadrant of their mouth. You can help them reach this goal by singing songs or setting timers. Some toothbrushes even have flashing lights or music built-in, which can encourage them to keep brushing. Remember to change their toothbrushes every three-months and whenever they have been sick.

Mainting a healthy diet, limiting sweets, and eliminating soda can help your teeth stay healthy. Our Preschoolers saw what happens to an egg when it sits in soda and it was not a pretty sight!

Easter Egg Hunt at NBRC

by Jennifer Landrieu

201303222My two boys have been bringing their Easter baskets to the North Branch Reformed Church’s annual Easter Egg Hunt since they were toddlers.

The church’s senior high youth group stuffs eggs with nut-free candies and symbols of Easter, like feathers, coins, and crosses. Then, they spread hundreds of eggs on the church lawn and playground.

201303221Families meet in Fellowship Hall and are given directions as to where each age-group will go for their hunt. Once all the eggs are found, everyone returns to Fellowship Hall to hear our Youth Pastor, Mark Swart, retell the Easter Story.

EVERYONE is welcome to attend ~ Preschool Families, church members, non-church members, neighbors, and friends! This year’s Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, March 23rd at 10am.

Bring your baskets and we’ll see you then.

Just Imagine…

by Jennifer Landrieu

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.
~ Ephesians 3:20

The Preschool is a special place for so many families. We share smiles, hugs, high-fives, and handshakes with everyone who visits.

Just like a good neighbor, we welcome our families through the back door of the church and into our seven colorful classrooms. The Preschool’s 150 children and 20 staff members use the church sanctuary and education building (which includes the classrooms, Fellowship Hall, Upper Lounge, kitchen, and basement) on a daily basis.

The North Branch Reformed Church has begun a capital campaign to ensure that our building is here for Preschoolers and their families to enjoy in the future. If you’re interested in helping us preserve our facility so that other families may enjoy it, we ask that you consider making a financial contribution to this campaign. You’re invited to visit the NBRC 2013 Capital Campaign website. There’s a link to PayPal on the site, which makes giving more convenient.

You’ll also find a rich history of our church and local area dating back 187 years!
